What You Need

  • A Set of Cornhole Boards- You can find cornhole boards at most places that sell out door sports and leisure equipment along with numerous companies building and selling them online. Cornhole boards are a 2-foot by 4-foot platform, propped up by legs at one end, with a hole cut in that same end, shown in this picture. You need a set of two boards to play cornhole.
  • Cornhole Bags- Cornhole bags (seen above) are Similar to bean bags. Cornhole bags are 6 inches by 6 inches, usually filled with feed corn or plastic pellets. You need 2 sets of 4 cornhole bags, for a total of 8 bags for a cornhole set. Each set of 4 cornhole bags should be different color or design, so they don’t get confused with your opponents bags during gameplay.

The Court Layout and Player Positions

This picture shows how to set up your two cornhole boards. It is an identical layout for head-to-head play or team play. For player positions you will always stand in the “pitchers” boxes when it is your turn to throw.

How to Play

Cornhole can be played with 2 or 4 players, In the 2 player game you and your opponent will stand on the same side of the court in the pitchers box of your choice. (left or right side of the board) You will alternate throwing each of your four cornhole bags until they are all thrown. The two players will then walk across the court to the other cornhole board and count their points. They will play back and forth until the game is complete.

In 4 player cornhole you will have 2 teams of 2 players. A member of each team will stand at opposite cornhole boards so that 2 opposing players will be at each board. The only difference in team play, is that you don’t walk back and forth between cornhole boards. You will throw the cornhole bags one direction against one member of the opposing team, and your teammate and other opponent will throw them back. (the same procedure as horseshoes) This will continue until the game is complete.

The Objective – Separating the Winners and Losers

Your objective in cornhole is to throw or pitch your 4 cornhole bags (from you pitchers box) into the hole on the cornhole board across the court. You get 3 points for throwing a cornhole bag in the hole on the cornhole board, and you get a single point for landing a cornhole bag on the board. You will play back and forth until a player or team scores 21 points declaring them the winner. There is a couple different variations of scoring and rules which I have linked below.
